#1 Boston Celtics vs.
#16 Washington Wizards

Story: The NBA's new baby plays host to the surprising Wizards. But what makes this a matchup - The return of Agent Zero. When Gilbert get hot, no team is unbeatable. Tough out for the KG, PP, and Ray-Ray.

#2 LA Lakers vs.
#15 Portland Trailblazers

Story: Is this the year 2001? This seems like a more accurate first round matchup for the new West favorites then having the Lakers face tough-to-stop Houston. Portland could finish over .500 and still not get in.

#3 Detroit Pistons vs.
#14 Toronto Raptors

Story: Under current playoffs this would be a second round matchup. But under the 16 team playoff seed a Detroit/Chris Paul 2nd round would be much much more interesting

#4 San Antonio Spurs vs.
#13 Cleveland Cavaliers

Story: Finals rematch in the first round? Never happened before, but could be the norm. Lebron's new cast would be sure to give the Spurs the fight of a lifetime this time around.

#5 Phoneix Suns vs.
#12 Denver Nuggets

Story: Denver is fighting for their playoff lives in the packed West. Phoenix looks to be facing the tough Utah Jazz in the first round. This would be a better solution for both. Allen Iverson should be in the playoffs

# 6 New Orleans Hornets vs.
#11 Golden State Warriors

Story: Chris Paul takes on Baron Davis. Baron is facing off against his former team. A tough and spirited matchup that could make Chris Paul the next Tracy McGrady

# 7 Dallas Mavericks vs.
#10 Orlando Magic

Story: Kidd takes on Eastern opponents in the first round. Dwight could shine in a series like this and the Western Conference could be exposed.

#8 Utah Jazz vs.
#9 Houston Rockets

Story: Heads will roll when these two playoff rivals lock up. If this series is as physical as their last year's then it will be one for the ages. But with no Yao, this matchup is not likely.

If the playoffs were formatted like this, we would be able to see much better matchups, and not hope to see a West vs. East game until the Finals. Though most of these teams would end up making the playoffs anyway, I find some of these other matchups more interesting.

not a bad concept but I thnk that there would have to be other changes to make this work better, like divide up east and west into maybe a north south east and west, or a 4 confrence thing, make it more like the NCAA, but otherwise i like it how it is

phantom 309... I love that idea. That would make divisions more relevant. I will work up some brackets to see what I get.
